Ford wants to extend Billy Bishop Airport's runways to make way for jets. It might not be that simple
The owner of Toronto's island airport "fully supports" an idea by Premier Doug Ford to expand its runways to make way for jets, but says changes to how the airport is governed would have to happen first.

Where Reindeer Fly: The World’s Northernmost Airports

    Eastern Russia and North America

Listed below and shown on the maps above and below are the northernmost commercial airports in the world with regular passenger service. All are situated above the Arctic Circle.  Five nations are represented including Canada, Greenland (territory of Denmark), Norway, Russia, and the United States. It was a little surprising not to see any in Finland, but the airports situated there just miss the minimum 70 degree north latitude requirement for this post.

Northern Europe (Norway) and Western Russia

Commercial airports located so far north face many unique challenges, from 24/7 darkness part of the year to 24/7 daylight another part of the year. From bitter cold, adverse weather, permafrost, ice fog, climate change to potentially dangerous wildlife encounters.

Longest runways at American commercial airports

Listed below are the longest runways at commercial airports in the United States. The minimum length for inclusion is 10,000 feet. As can be seen, 10,000 feet is the most common length, followed by 10,001 feet.

Several smaller markets have lengthy runways including Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Roswell, Lincoln, Salina, Portsmouth, and Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Many of these are the result of the airport also being the site of an active or former air force base.

Longest of them all – Runway 16R/34L in Denver – Source: wwclyde.net

The airports with the most runways of 10,000 feet or longer are Denver with six (6), followed by Dallas-Fort Worth International and Chicago O’Hare with four (4) each.

    Peace!

p.s. (11/24/25) – Apologies that the original posting on 11/24/25 somehow left out airports in Colorado. Guess I must have gotten distracted while writing the post. Thank you to Gary for noticing this and for providing other additions/corrections.
