Tonight in 1972 — Ruby Keeler (age 62) tap-danced and played ukulele on the Tony Awards on ABC.
Her number was from NO, NO NANETTE, the musical revival that brought her back to Broadway after 40 years.

42nd Street (1933), arguably the greatest musical of them all. Hardboiled, sexy, sassy, snappy plus those Busby Berkeley production numbers. It's like a delicious cocktail but with enough hard liquor in it to give it a real kick. Movie magic.

I must be slipping. I can't remember having come across this song by the great Harry Warren and Al Dubin ('42nd Street') before, or the film it comes from. I know. Dick Powell! Ruby Keeler! Obviously it's up to their usual fabulous standard.
