Why do I continue to maintain #sysklogd on Linux when there's #rsyslog and #syslogng?

I believe what sysklogd has going for it is exactly what the competitors sacrificed: simplicity, a tiny footprint, zero dependencies beyond libc, and a config file a human can read in five minutes. On embedded systems, routers, and appliances that's not a consolation prize — it's the point.

New: production-ready observability stack integrated into rsyslog.

Last Friday, a new reference stack was merged. ROSI (Rsyslog Operations Stack Initiative) provides a curated setup for centralized logging and monitoring.

It combines rsyslog, Loki, Prometheus, and Grafana in a Docker Compose deployment with TLS by default.

Initial scope targets VM-based and single-host Docker setups. Kubernetes support is targeted next.

Looking into #syslog server implementations, trying to decide if I should go with #rsyslog or #syslog-ng. Apparently the maintainer (!) of rsyslog is a slop coder (see https://github.com/rsyslog/rsyslog/pull/6328). Might want to avoid rsyslog in the future, I definitely will.

What's the point, honestly

I "get it" for corporations, Microsoft, Oracle, etc they didn't do anything for the love of the craft. But why the fuck would you do this for what is supposed to be your passion project? Just... Stop doing it, find something else that makes you happy.
