Als Kind war Schwimmen für mich eine Schmach. Nicht wegen des Wassers. Wegen der Blicke. Wegen der Sprüche. Wegen des Gefühls, immer zu langsam und nie gut genug zu sein. Dann vergingen Jahrzehnte. Die Augen wurden schlechter. Das Leben schwerer. Heute schwimme ich wieder. Bahn für Bahn.

Und heute verstehe ich: Das Wasser urteilt nicht. Es fragt nicht nach Diagnosen. Nicht nach Fehlern. Es trägt einfach. Vielleicht ist das der Grund, warum ich heute schwimme. Nicht um schneller zu werden. Sondern um Frieden mit dem Jungen von damals zu schließen.

The skill to make myself forget.

Interviewer: one that’s not trauma related.

Kemi: Oh. Uh. Art. I tried to redraw the selfies people took of me before the war. My art skills are so ass that I could not replicate it properly. It looked terrible.

I want to draw the colorful fiery halos that surround me before I light my fireworks. I want to draw my happy, smiling face that I don’t see anymore. I want to I want to I want to. I want to draw! I want my art to mean something and it can’t mean anything if it looks like a child drew it! Nobody will look at that.

Interviewer: technically. Art is subjective. And besides, your art can’t be that childish.

Kemi: I wish I could believe you. When my friend posts it, nothing happens.

Interviewer: posts it?? That’s because so many people are posting things. It’s bound to be drown out. And websites want you to pay to be seen in the algorithm. Try another way that isn’t on engagement-based platforms.

Kemi: I suppose so.
