I’d messed up badly. Not only had I frozen and gotten Matsumoto hurt, but I’d ruined the vision we were following. Matsumoto had been with us in the Katasu vision, but now she had gone home. Shishi should be yelling at me, not comforting me. Glorious me was going to protect her. Right, instead, she was comforting the big baby.
When we reached the tunnel, she finally spoke. “We should chant. Those hands were creepy.”
She was right, and I should have thought of that. But no, I was too busy wallowing in my own shame.

The train doors opened with a hiss, and we stepped inside. Underfoot, cicada corpses crunched. They were scattered around the door like Christmas snow the wind had blown in. The seats were empty except for items passengers might have left behind: a girl’s sailor suit, a briefcase, and an elf’s hat.
I pointed to one of the seats in the front. In it sat a pigeon, pecking at a cicada. Next to it was a Western-style conductor’s hat.
"At least one of them isn't driving," Shishi said.
"I wouldn't be so sure," I replied.

I tried to turn toward her, but realized I couldn’t move. It was like sleep paralysis, where only my eyes moved. By squinting to the side, I could see a glass dome. Through it appeared the distorted shape of a can of red bean soup towering above me. Beyond that were the cabin and the bed#room. Floating above it all was Claire’s distorted, terrified face.

It was a simple cafe, advertising carefully sourced ingredients. The interior was dim with lots of wood. Brown was the word that came to mind viewing it. The shadowy brown of an ancient haunted grove. Faces with masks under their chins floated in dark liminal spaces. The smell of food gave a sense of warmth the decor failed to lend the place.

You’re from the future, singing another sad song about the needless dying. The guns don’t stay silent long, do they?”
“No, they don’t,” I said. “Nor the sound of jackboots. ‘Gotta get down to it. Soldiers are gunning us down.’ That’s from another song—the fascist rabbits scare me.”
