Who Knew  Diplolepis rosae

unexpected natural wonder

I wonder, if I draw a line...

Sleeping Thorn

What looks like straight out of a fairy tale, is actually the cradle of the rose gall wasp (Diplolepis rosae). It is known under various names, such as "rose bedeguar gall " or "mossy gall". It often appears as a mossy growth on roses.

Here, the "moss" has withered away. Only the galls that protect the wasp grubs, and the holes, from which the adult wasps emerge in Spring, are visible.
