I'm brand new to having rooftop solar. We only got permission to operate just over a month ago. It has been a lot of fun to keep up with usage and see where we stand. We've had what feels like a lot of cloudy days, I pay attention to that stuff now. Despite clouds, our billing period ends this week and so far we're at net 13 kWh from the grid.

Times of India | Energy audits: Punjab to help 1,875 MSMEs cut costs, power

Chandigarh: To improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs of industry, the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) will conduct comprehensive energy audits of 1,875 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the state. The initiative is intended to help MSMEs understand their energy consumption patterns and identify areas for savings. For enterprises operating on thin margins, even small reductions in energy use could lower costs, improve competitiveness and support decarbonisation efforts. Under the project, the audits will assess energy consumption patterns, identify energy conservation and process improvement measures, and estimate potential savings in energy, costs and carbon dioxide emissions. The exercise will also lead to the preparation of bankable and implementable audit reports, besides establishing a state-level energy efficiency baseline for MSMEs.

The audits will include investment-grade energy audits (IGEA) to determine the existing energy performance of each unit. Major energy-consuming systems such as motors, boilers, furnaces, kilns, cooling towers and compressors will be examined, and unit-specific energy-saving interventions recommended. A techno-economic evaluation will also be undertaken to assess the feasibility of the proposed measures, including payback analysis and internal rate of return (IRR)-based financial evaluation. Officials said the audits will analyse at least 12 months of historical utility data, including electricity and fuel consumption, along with production profiles and operational parameters such as working hours and equipment schedules. A detailed implementation roadmap will also be prepared.

The exercise will cover electrical, thermal, utility and process systems, while also exploring the scope for rooftop solar, solar thermal applications and waste heat recovery. The initiative is being undertaken in consultation with the department of industries and commerce under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) scheme. PEDA has initiated the process of hiring a consultant for the project, which is to be completed within nine months. Officials said the initiative is expected to provide MSMEs with actionable insights to reduce energy use, cut costs and move towards more sustainable operations.

Turns out, if the weather mostly cooperates, we don't run the AC most days, don't do laundry, don't cook anything (no kitchen, so... Ha!) and don't charge @Jillianmarisa's EV, our #RooftopSolar can generate more power than we consume over the week. Yay?

That's still charging my PHEV, dealing with an old/inefficient electric water heater and carrying the home's base load.

Ooooh. Now, that I've convinced the Domestic Department of Internal Affairs (DDIA) of roof top solar to be a good idea, this site doesn't work any more:

https://solarpower.cer.auckland.ac.nz/

Any suggestions on what other resources for input on planning/decision making would be suitable?

I'd think we'd start with a set of panels up front, and in future years add battery storage later on (to make it more manageable from a financial perspective).

Solar Potential Map

I finally installed our new EV charging station. Pretty cool, you can control how many amps you want.

We are at peak solar production right now. With a minor current adjustment we’re charging @Jillianmarisa’s car on pure sunshine, carrying the home’s base load, and still exporting ~500 watts to the grid. Too dang cool! Weeeeeee!

There are two powerful forces at work in the Global #EnergyTransformation; 1/ The rapid migration from the #BaseloadParadigm to the “#BatteriesAreTheGrid de-facto architecture and 2/ Consumer #EnergyIndependence via #RooftopSolar (and local #BESS) - #CommunitySolar solutions. Both forces are #virtuous and have changed #EnergyModels forever. @RenewEconomyRSSFeed
Appeals court rules against solar panel owners in CA reimbursement rules

A California appeals court upheld a 2022 regulatory decision to reduce rooftop solar payments, siding with utility companies.

CalMatters

Today our rooftop solar generated ~75% of our power. I bet we would have been >100% had we not charged Jillian’s car and not washed (and dried) multiple comforters. None of this is a problem, just excited commentary. So much fun.

It was supposed to be sunny today. It is thus far, not. However the still 100% cloud coverage is the thinnest it has been all week, except for a few very brief Sol Peekaboos yesterday.

We’re on track for our best solar production day ever. Yay!
