Spari e la nuova paura di un attentato al presidente degli Stati Uniti nel corso della cena con i corrispondenti alla Casa Bianca. Un uomo, poi identificato con il 31enne Cole Tomas Allen, ha sorpassato di corsa i metal detector con un’arma in pugno e ha aperto il fuoco contro un agente del Secret Service, ferendolo, nel tentativo di raggiungere la sala dove si stava tenendo l’evento al quale erano presenti anche Donald e Melania Trump. I colpi d’arma da fuoco, quattro o cinque secondo i presenti, sono stati uditi anche nel salone, tanto che i presenti si sono accucciati sotto ai tavoli, mentre il presidente si è alzato, è caduto ed è stato subito soccorso da agenti dei servizi che lo hanno scortato fuori, illeso. Lo stesso anche per i vari ministri presenti.
La cena è stata cancellata ed è stata riprogrammata, ma il presidente è comunque riapparso in pubblico per tenere un discorso intorno alle 22.30 locali. “Abbiamo un annuncio da fare, il programma riprenderà”, ha infatti annunciato dal palco la presidente dell’associazione dei giornalisti della Casa Bianca. E il tyccon ha esordito dicendo che “è stato molto inaspettato. Questo era un evento dedicato alla libertà di espressione e avrebbe dovuto mettere insieme persone dei due partiti, con membri della stampa. E in un certo senso lo ha fatto”.
Molti gli elementi di analogia, soprattutto per i corrispondenti più navigati, che hanno riportato alla mente eventi del passato. Non solo il fallito attentato durante un comizio in Pennsylvania, nel 2024, quando il ventenne Thomas Matthew Crooks ha sparato colpi con un fucile Ar-15 verso il presidente ferendolo a un orecchio, o l’attentato, quello sì fatale, all’attivista voce della destra conservatrice, Charlie Kirk, ma anche l’attentato a Ronald Reagan del 1981 per mano di John Hinckley Jr. L’evento di sabato notte si teneva infatti nello stesso hotel, l’Hilton di Washington.

A shooting and the new fear of an attack on the President of the United States during dinner with journalists at the White House. A man, later identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, sprinted past the metal detectors with a weapon in his hand and opened fire on a Secret Service agent, wounding him, in an attempt to reach the room where the event was being held, which also included Donald and Melania Trump. The gunshots, four or five according to witnesses, were also heard in the ballroom, so the attendees huddled under the tables, while the President stood up, fell, and was immediately attended to by Secret Service agents who escorted him out unharmed. The same also for various ministers present.

The dinner was canceled and rescheduled, but the President still appeared in public to give a speech around 10:30 PM local time. “We have an announcement to make, the program will resume,” announced the president of the White House journalists’ association from the stage. And the tycoon began by saying that “it was very unexpected. This was an event dedicated to freedom of expression and should have brought together people from both parties, with members of the press. And in a certain sense it did.”

Many elements of similarity, especially for more experienced correspondents, brought to mind events from the past. Not only the failed attack during a rally in Pennsylvania in 2024, when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots with an AR-15 rifle towards the President, wounding him in the ear, or the attack, the fatal one, on conservative activist Charlie Kirk, but also the attack on Ronald Reagan in 1981 by John Hinckley Jr. The event on Saturday night was held in the same hotel, the Hilton in Washington.
