Chysauster Cornwall

Romano-British village of 8-10 houses, with their own internal courtyard. 110 recorded courtyard houses on the Land's End peninsula and Isles of Scilly. They are unique within the range of Romano-British settlement types.

The Chysauster settlement, together with a fogou, round cairn and part of a prehistoric field system, represents the largest and best preserved example of this rare type of settlement.

One of my favorite authors is Rosemary Sutcliff. She's best known as a "young adult" novelist focusing on historical fiction in the liminal period between when Rome ruled Britain and when the Anglo-Saxon tribes pushed the Romano-British peoples to Wales and Cornwall. She wrote books like Eagle of the Ninth (made into a pretty good movie) and Sword at Sunset.

I like her for two main reasons: 1) While it's not world-building per se, she does a great job of exploring a historical period with many pieces of fiction from different perspectives over a period of about 150 years. She writes about the lost Roman legion that signaled the beginning of the slow retreat from Britain, the last light at the lighthouse in Rutupiae (Richborough) as the last Roman soldiers sailed away from the island, the once-legionnaire Ambrosius Aurelianus who led a resistance against the Germanic invaders ... 2) She has a really interesting backstory told in her autobiography Blue Remembered Hills. She was affected by a disease as a child that left her with deformed arms and legs. She painted miniature portraits before she got into writing novels and never married.

If you like sometimes speculative (charmingly so) historical fiction, give Sutcliff a try! It's not really only good for kids at all—I don't know why her work is categorized that way.

From fields to forts — Greaves Ash’s role in Roman Britain

I see some squiggly lines on the map, paired with fancy Gothic writing, and I just can't resist taking a look. And more often than not, it turns up a gem.

This is Greaves Ash, close to Linhope, high up in the Breamish Valley. Turns out, it is a big Romano-British settlement, with the obvious remains of many roundhouses, walls, and trac ...
