#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 20: How did you find your writerly voice?

By reading a lot, and writing a lot. Writing gave me the skills to find how to say things, to explain things, and how to write the voices in my head. I can go back and read some of my earlier writing and see how my voice matured and strengthened. Old stories sound like a 13 year old wrote them (because I was 13 at the time). I like what my voice has become.

Today's Word Prompt - Idyllic
Meaning: (especially of a time or place) like an idyll; extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque.

Donncha's exasperated tone, set both of us off. Fresh peals of laughter echoed around the clearing. Leaning on each other in our mirth, we hobbled through the snow, back toward my idyllic castle. Never did I think that Lady Emerald and I would find something in common to laugh over.

Today's Word Prompt - Labyrinth
Meaning: a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way; a maze.

The starlight followed us as we step into the holes left in the snow from mine and Donncha's previous footsteps. As we pass the garden labyrinth, only recognizable by the straight shrubbery border, a shiver run up my spine.
“We must hurry. Something hunts us from the dark.” Donncha rumbles.

Today's Word Prompt - Acquiesce
Meaning: accept something without protest.

I acquiesce without a word with Donncha's urging. There are only a few things I’ve found that spook my protector, dragons and werewolves. Neither of which I'm prepared to encounter tonight. As soon as the solarium door clicks closed, I breathe a sigh of relief. Neither monster will attack my castle.

Meaning: cause distress to.

"I see. Then you deserve this prize for your harrowing experience. You seem undisturbed by your grandmother's death at my grandson's hands." Not really a question more of a statement, but her raised eyebrow informs me she is expecting an answer.

Today's Word Prompt - Salacious
Meaning: having or conveying undue or inappropriate interest in sexual matters.

"Absolutely not. My grandmother was a monster. The only disturbing thoughts I’ve had about your grandson are of the salacious type." I say winking at Donncha, who rolls his eyes at my silliness.
I’m rewarded with a chuckle from Lady Emerald.
“That a girl. My grandson is quite the catch.”

Today's Word Prompt - Darkness
Meaning: the partial or total absence of light.

"He is. He removed the darkness from my life and knows how to use what the Gods gave him."
I barely hear Donncha’s groan over his grandmother's cackle. I laugh with her, thankful that she has a sense of humor.
"Come along ladies, I think it's past both of your bed times."

I look around, concerned about animals attacking in the night. It seems perilous to me to light up our location. I shake my head at myself when I realize I’m with two witches who’d absolutely handle anything that would attack us in the night. The greatest danger is them.

Today's Word Prompt - Abscond
Meaning: leave hurriedly and secretly, typically to avoid detection of or arrest for an unlawful action such as theft.

The gentle plucking at my grandmother's long length chain of gold and jewels that I have worn since her death, draws my attention to the spritely witch.
"It seems you’ve some secrets yet. The only way to wear this bauble is to abscond with it after the owner dies."

Today's Word Prompt - Puncture
Meaning: a small hole in a tire resulting in an escape of air.

"Yes, that’s what my father told me before he died. When my grandmother died, I waited until the last rattling breath hissed from the puncture Donncha's knife left along her throat. A hideous task but this prize couldn’t fall into another's hands." The witch’s eyes only narrow with my description.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov 14: How objective or authoritative do you strive for your narration to be?

Not at all, for either. I usually write in a character's POV so they aren't objective at all about what's going on. They have a limited perspective - which is why I switch between the 1MC and the 2MC throughout the book, sometimes throwing in the bad guy's POV. I don't write how-to books or non fiction, so no need for authoritative voice in my writing.

"She nothing like her grandmother. She shared the same level of anathema you did for her grandmother." Donncha says cautiously, trying to reason with the unreasonable.
"Is that so?" Lady Emerald’s glare drops. "Well then, we can be friends.!" She announces gleefully as she slips past Donncha and loops her arm with mine.

Meaning: Clear or obvious to the eye or mind. Display or show (a quality or feeling) by one's acts or appearance; demonstrate.

"Well then, we can be friends." she says gleefully, slipping past Donncha and looping her arm with mine. "Did she try to ruin your destiny, too, my dear?"
Thrown off by her grandmotherly demeanor, I glance at Donncha for reassurance.
I reply, "Yes, but I'm manifesting a new one."

Today's Word Prompt - Luminous
Meaning: Full of or shedding light; bright or shining, especially in the dark.

“I did the same thing when your grandmother ruined my life. Now, let's get a look at you. It's been many years since I've laid eyes on you."
The stooped woman, taps on a matching talisman to Donncha's and makes the starlight so luminous the clearing turns bright as day.
