Ach, kameraden, nehmt einfach rauchzeichen! Oder haltet bananen aus den panzern! Ihr seid eh nur kanonenfutter. Das ist halt die BRD hier. Warum sollte da so eine klitsche wie rohde & schwarz ein funkzjonierendes gerät abliefern, wenn man auch ein ab werk kaputtes gerät abliefern und mit diversen nachbesserungen ein weiteres milljärdchen nach dem anderen reinholen kann. Die müssen echt immer lustige verträge haben, damit so etwas möglich ist. Verträge, die vor grenzenloser bananigkeit schon gelb aussehen. Grüße auch an das beschaffungsamt der bundeswehrmacht, wo der eine oder andere sich sicherlich die taschen vollgemacht hat.

In November 2023, I experimented with directional finding using a ‘rat race’ 4 port coupler. The coupler outputs deliver the sum and difference of the received signals from the two antennas and at the difference (‘DELTA’) output, a reasonably sharp signal ‘null’ is present exactly between the antennas.
In principal this should also be doable by comparing the RSSI (signal strength) between two completely similar receiver chains.
Using two AD8317, wideband demodulating logarithmic amplifiers and two antennas, the DC voltage on the output can be displayed on the oscilloscope (yellow and blue trace), and more importantly, the difference (‘DELTA’) between them (red trace).
Moving an RF source in front of the antennas, it’s clear that the DELTA signal drops when the source is right between them, and rises again towards the edges.
RF filtering will be needed to limit the AD8317 10GHz bandwidth 🙂

I decided to measure the impedances in a typical #hamradio #antenna setup with an unmatched antenna, here simulated by a 270R resistor.
At 3.5MHz, the feeder (25m H155) transforms this to 30+j51 ohms. Using the #nanovna_v2, I adjusted the tuner to a 50 ohm match at the tuner input.
Terminating the tuner input with 50 ohm, I removed the feeder and measured into the tuner output. I got (almost) the exact conjugate: 33-j53 ohm 👍🏼🙂
So the tuner presents a capacitive conjugate to match the inductive part of the impedance presented by the feeder.
That’s all there is to it: the antenna tuner doesn’t ’tune the antenna’, it creates a decent match to the transceiver while presenting a complex-conjugate to whichever impedance is presented by the end of the feeder, thereby securing maximum power transfer 🙂

It’s time to answer my #easterquiz: it’s a ‘sweeper’, some would call it ‘Jammer’ 🤷🏼♂️🤓
They come in all kinds of frequency bands and output power levels - be aware they may be illegal in your country. I ordered this to operate in a band covered by my #hamradio license and I have no intentions of ever transmitting into an antenna.
In short, it uses a 555 timer to generate a 100kHz ramp signal which is fed to a 400-500MHz VCO. Center frequency and bandwidth can be adjusted by two trim pots. The output signal is then amplified - that’s all there is to it 👌🏻
I fed the output through a 30dB high power attenuator, then split it to my spectrum analyzer (through another 20dB) and a detector diode to my oscilloscope.
It’s not a completely calibrated setup, but the measurements seem to agree at about 1W ‘channel power’. Not much, not very efficient, but it works just fine 🙂👍🏼

I found a small speaker and attached a square of reflector tape onto the dome.
Using the #CuteGen™️ I sent 1Vpp, 40Hz, to the speaker. No sound, which really isn’t a surprise because it hardly has any response at such low frequencies.
On the scope however, a funny curve appeared 😃
The top sine wave is the speaker drive signal, the lower yellow trace is the output from the laser amplifier (see my other post, building the circuit).
There’s a clear marking at the top and bottom of the sine wave. Between them, a sawtooth-like response. Each of the sawtooth peaks means the speaker surface moved a whole wavelength, in this case 650nm. 4-5 of those means that the speaker moves about 3um (micro meter) in each direction.
Not much 😳🤯
No wonder there’s no audible sound 👌🏻
It took a while for me to adjust it all to produce this measurement. But it does work 😎
