Stage 2 of my little rock garden is complete. We had enough of the right sized aggregate and some pea gravel on hand to mulch the slope and most of the scree.
Micro weeding before spreading the aggregate was the hardest part. I left some local volunteers, including the ridiculously tall fleabane, just because I like them. They'll eventually be replaced by chosen imports.

The first rock garden plantings are starting to show. I've left some of the "local volunteers" to help hold the soil until I find just the right crushed stone mulch, and more plants of course.
Gritty rock garden with large and small boulders forming a slope and scree, backed by a grey parged wall. Purple Siberian irises, yellowish lewisia, and fuschia-pink dianthus are blooming. You can just make out small sedums between some of the rocks.

Here's one for @nev
I've been seeing these funky little (*tiny*) critters for a few weeks in the #RockGardens - on the soil/ plant debris. Here some of them were #RockClimbing making it a bit easier to get shots (still tricky as they don't stand still and my camera is having focussing issues...lol) Velvet Mites /Eutrombidium genus- I think!

View from this morning of one of the #RockGardens in front of the house, as the sun was just coming into the yard. Now, later afternoon much of the snow has melted, but there is still a line- similar to the shadow line you see farther back in the photo- where the trees behind keep it shaded and the snow remains! That little mound above left centre is winter snow still. This rain and snow should have the grass greening soon #garden #snow #spring #Alberta #Canada #SnowMother #weather
Did some modest clean-up in the #RockGardens in front of the house yesterday- clearing away some winter debris along with last year's stems etc in preparation for Crocus, Snowdrops and Tulips that are poking their noses out...
Just now housemate looking out the window says "Those small small hole digging #bees are all over your rock garden." #Garden success! #Spring :)

King's Crown 👑 also known as Western roseroot or ledge stonecrop. It grows in western US and Canada at high elevation. It's also good for rock gardens. Fun little plant with clusters of flowers. Only grows to a foot high.

In other news, new microns are a dream to draw with.

@plants @nature #InsectThursday #ThrowbackThursday #RockGardens are great for #pollinators- I have flowers from early spring (before native plants start) until covered by snow in mid-late fall. #Bees of all sorts love the #flowers on this low mounding Paederota bonarota (Potentilla nitida and Sempervivum behind) like this flashy #bumblebee ! And check out the blue and yellow pollen bundles in the close crop! #Alberta #NaturalGardening #florespondence #FlowerFriday
