Kick rocks!

That’s what we started to do, attempting to use our feet to clear the west shoulder of Olmsted Rd near Hwy 68 / CA SR 68. Then we noticed the east shoulder and travel lanes were likewise strewn with many rocks! We don’t take for granted the labor of tree crews who clear roads and roadsides. On yesterday’s ride, we came upon a large tree downed along the edge of this Monterey County road. Workers’ labor today made significant progress; it is now transformed to small logs.

Tax renewals funding animal shelter, rural fire protection pass on second try

In the second low turnout election in less than two months, Lafayette residents passed two millage renewals, previously rejected narrowly in March. Both propositions reached roughly 70% approval on Saturday. 

The two millages will now continue as part of Lafayette Parish property taxes for 10 more years, with the road maintenance millage extended to 2036, and the drainage and public health millage extended to 2035. They are expected to generate roughly $24 million total annually, more than a quarter of the parish’s total tax collections in a given year. 

Without the millage, LCG would have had tough decisions to make. Rural fire protection, the animal shelter and ongoing drainage projects across the parish were at risk of losing funding should the millages have failed. 

The restructure is intended to give the system more power to deal with financial problems at its schools.

Lafayette residents are not completely done renewing 10-year millages. The Lafayette Public Library System millage is set to expire in 2027, unless continued by voters. The parish council has already sent the millage to the bond commission for approval, a first step in placing it on the ballot.
