I like this good news story from Morning Report on #RNZ National radio today. A kokorā, NZ little blue penguin, got itself seriously tangled in the netting of a soccer goal in a residential garden in New Plymouth. The boy who found it alerted his grandma who called the Department of Conservation. The penguin was carefully extracted from the netting, checked over by a vet, then released back at the shore.

Penguin gets stuck in soccer net in New Plymouth garden

With the Football World Cup kicking off in a little over 24 hours, there will be many balls in the back of the net over the coming weeks. But one little penguin unfortunately found itself tangled in a football net in a New Plymouth garden. Ten -year-old Ezra made the discovery, before alerting his grandmother, Jackie Tomlinson who spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Emile Donovan wants to stick with convention and call Pete Hegseth the "Secretary of Defence";

Why? Given the number of wars the US has started or escalated - at least 1 started during this administration too - I think Hegseth's choice of job title is curiously appropriate.

Midweek - anti-nuke angst, gagging, rich list resistance, youth news fails episode of Mediawatch

How one freelancer prompted a 'freeloader' claim that propelled our anti-nuke policy into the news. Also: two efforts to gag the media, NBR puts up 'rich list' resistance, NZ's dismal youth news history.

Best of luck to the millipede researchers

'Historic millipede outbreak sparks fresh research'

""If there's been a boom and a bust somewhere, why can't there be a boom and a bust here?"

The question is so compelling that it's become the prioity for one of Lester's research students who will head to Tauranga this summer to conduct fieldwork - with both Greater Wellington Regional Council and Wellington City Council contributing money to fund it."

Thanks @cuddlyanarchist for taking the time to write this up. For an article titled "The real-world cost of AI" the author goes out of their way to either ignore or avoid most of the real-world costs.

The story claims "A single high-resolution AI video clip can require more than 415Wh..." without mentioning that's for one, ten second clip.

Even more disappointing, it's authored by RNZ's "Climate Change Correspondent". I wonder how much AI was used in the compilation of that piece?

Here's the original RNZ story:

The real-world cost of AI

Explainer: There's been plenty of speculation about the resources AI gobbles up. A new report lays bare the cost of our growing obsession.
