Beach Bums
At Holly Beach, Louisiana, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, four ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) stand together, gazing out toward the sea. Gentle waves roll in, their foamy edges reaching the soaked sand, still glistening from the retreat of the last swell. The gulls’ reflections stretch across the damp surface, creating mirror images that ripple softly with the shifting tide.

When tested at only two days of age, chicks showed a preference for magnetic bearings that would take them in the appropriate direction for their fall migration.
