Speakers happily repaired. I got the bad caps out last night and the new ones in tonight. No hiss, no whine, just pure bliss.

It's amazing what you can do when you can repair the things you own.

Dear companies that aren't DigiKey, you know what the main reason for me preferring DK over you is besides the readily visible ones like size of stock and large selection of parts?

They are willing to absorb all extra customs cost, specifically the extortionist fees that DHL, UPS, Fedex et al levy on anything I have to pay import VAT on. I am not in the EU or US, so this is basically a default situation for me.

To make it clear: I don't mind paying for shipping, or import duties/VAT themselves, but I find the practice of slapping on another 20+ bucks ontop of them disgusting, and my only option to avoid it is to order from places like DK which have a "volume agreement" with the big three (so it's not priced into goods either).

Waiting a few extra days and the sometimes extra-clunky web experience (looking at you, Reichelt, Conrad, RS, TME and a few others) are all fine, as are the shipping fees. Minimum order sizes I grumble about, but I get it.

So this is what I was at last night - fixing Psion Series 7 & Netbook computers. Look at my nice surgical soldering field - repairing a blown Series 7 motherboard - nice job! My cheap spares-repairs ebay purchase had a netbook personality module, so I upgraded my workhorse machine. These old beauties bring so much joy :-) #retrocomputing #permacomputing #psion #righttoRepair

9 in 45136 Essen. Das #Repaircafe findet im UG des Hofgebäudes statt.

Some might question why I have a particular taste in more expensive gear. Tonight is just that reason. The Yorkville YSM3BT Studio Monitors of mine that I've had for I'd say a good solid 5-6 years now, at least pre-COVID, started giving up the ghost.

BUT not all is lost. I opened up the main speaker and found that two of the filter 1000uF caps are bulging like crazy.

Fortunately, Yorkville are a trustworthy local company, and they publicly post their service manuals for their products including full schematics.

Meaning, that tomorrow morning I will have an order in with DigiKey for 10 of the caps, and hopefully by Thursday night I should have the speakers repaired.

EFFecting Change: If You Own It, Why Can't You Fix It? | July 23 @12pm ET.

"Owning something should mean more than just bragging rights and a receipt. Corporations are making it harder for you to repair the devices & products you already own, & forcing you to pay them again for repairs & replacements. It costs consumers millions worldwide, sends tons of perfectly fixable items to landfills, & hands corps control over your property."

I know you may be surprised by this.

But there's a lot of people that are absolutely not engaged politically, emotionally or humanly speaking to many decisions they take.

They don't understand the concept of taking a stance. From their perspective, even in awful products there is good and that is what matters.
They don't see actions even really bad ones as being bad. They only want to see the progress that can potentially be made, the use of the tools, the positive that it can bring you.

I know that this may sound weird especially here in #mastodon it is a very foreign concept. I have found these people in any circles, medical, legal, banking, engineering, etc.

What surpises me the most is that in general these people come at it from very different angles:
- it doesn't matter
- I can't do anything about it
- False assumptions (generally taken from marketing of the products they use.)
- acknowledging that they are doing something wrong but setting it as not so bad because xyz reason

It is very interesting, because for people that are terminally online, this may sound fully foreign.

Here is a few of the complex topics on which I had the chance to argue:
- #AI
- #enshitification #righttorepair
- #programmedobsolescense
- #ecology / #pollution
- #aibubble / #stocks
- #tesla #nvidia #Samsung #Google #Facebook

Basically amazing talks but challenging as well.

What I learned from it is that normal day people, even the ones with prestigious titles in a fancy bank or hospitals are basically all the same.
Everyone has their own problems, their own life, and most importantly their own goals. Even as simple as making money because that's what you need to do to keep a job (investor).

It is quite magical to be honest.
It's these touch grass moments that bring everyone together regardless of our individual feelings towards certain politics, technologies or corporations.

But it's also a double learning, I learned that, we, as a community of empowered people need to push harder to build better tools, better companies, better politics and better cities. If you are empowered to create something you can do both good and bad, and regardless of what you choose the people around you will rely on what you build and on it's defaults.
