Alright, someone had to do this. And I guess it had to me. A dramatic reading of the opening lines to all 24 Parker novels, written by Richard Stark (aka Donald E. Westlake). Really, if you haven't read this series, you are missing out on some of the greatest crime fiction ever written!

Dramatic Reading of Alll 24 Opening Lines to Richard Stark's Parker Novels

I love it when Donald E. Westlake's acute understanding of human behavior spills into something a bit philosophical. This is from the great late Parker novel, BACKFLASH, and the two men could just as easily be talking about the postelection divide in America.

And if you haven't read the Parker novels (this is my second read through of all 24), you really should. This is among the greatest crime fiction ever written.

So apparently there's a TV series based on Donald Westlake's Parker novels coming out. The title is PLAY DIRTY. I can't really get behind Mark Wahlberg as Parker. Just not feeling it. But I CAN get behind Keegan-Michael Key being involved in this. If he's playing Grofield, that's absolutely genius casting. Shane Black is the showrunner.

Play Dirty: Directed by Shane Black. With Rosa Salazar, Mark Wahlberg, Dermot Mulroney, Keegan-Michael Key. Follows Parker, a craftsman and professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic, and he is also deadly.

I'm still rereading and greatly enjoying the Parker novels. Donald E. Westlake really should have received the Paris Review interview treatment. There's so much -- just in the Richard Stark books; let's not gainsay the Dortmunder series! -- to learn about craft, momentum, and storytelling in these mean, no nonsense, and often jaw-dropping books.

I reread four Parker novels today and I feel that Parker's cold no nonsense professionalism is the best way to prepare anyone for the madness in store for us in 2025, with the jack booted MAGA cult filling in as amateurs who haven't thought out the job in advance.

It just occurred to me that if Lt. Castillo wasn't a cop, he'd probably be Donald Westlake's Parker.

The Man with the Getaway Face, from 1963, the 2nd Parker novel by Donald E. Westlake (as Richard Stark). Hardboiled crime featuring one of the great anti-heroes. The real focus here is not the heist but a plastic surgery job.
