Just harvested #rhubarb for the first time. We’ve had the plant for a few years but it’s gotten pretty big. Was always intimidated knowing the leaves were poisonous if ingested.
But went for it. Pulled some off of the main stalk. Tossed the leaves. Cut up and washed the stems. Took a bite.
Forever changed. Tart like a lemon. Crunch like an apple. Distinct fruity flavor. Yum!
First rhubarb harvest of the season. Making rhubarb raspberry cheesecake crumble bars. Hard freeze forecast this weekend, didn't want rhubarb mush.
Garlic and rhubarb. Soft neck California Heirloom, aka whatever is in the bag you buy garlic. This raised bed is for winter squash, which will only be butternut this year because I'm tired of acorn squash that taste bad and/or don't store good. Too many made up name squash seeds out there from seed sellers that are just repacking the same bulk seed junk as everyone else.

If rhubarb flowers appear, cut them off immediately. When rhubarb blooms, or bolts, it diverts all the plant’s energy away from producing edible stalks and channels it toward flowering and setting seed. Bolting is often triggered by a sudden spike in temperature or plant stress. By snipping the flower stalk at the base as soon as it appears, you signal to the plant to get back to growing petioles.
