Look behind you, a two-headed squirrel!

Meet David and Peapod, an upgrade to my Zak McKracken cosplay. They’re my first posable, semi-realistic animal art doll. They’re slightly bigger than real squirrels and made completely from scratch. This project took me nearly 100 crafting hours.

By now I’ve grown very fond of these guys, even if they look like they’re more than ready to murder anyone who gets between them and some peanuts. They’ve made sure that my Zak costume will get some more convention time this year.

Game over.

The Machine was my 13th Amiga related cosplay. The design is my interpretation that mixes the character’s appearance in the intros of Turrican 2 & 3 with inspiration from other sources, mainly the classic Borg.

This is my biggest costume project to date: it took me 980 crafting hours over 1 year. There was no 3D printing involved, just manual armour making with EVA foam and making use of a whole lot of bits and pieces like old computer chips and cellphone parts.

The Turrican helmet prop is from my 2nd Turrican suit that I made back in 2016.

That pair of nose glasses has been customised. It didn’t look right, so I replaced and styled all the facial hair.

Zak McKracken was my 14th Amiga related cosplay. I debuted it on the setup day of Amiga40 and I’ll wear it again this week at the Vintage Computer Festival in Solothurn, Switzerland.

This female version of Zak was one of the fastest and simplest costumes I’ve made, thanks to the “normal” clothing. Only a few parts of the costume had to be crafted: I improved the nose glasses (not seen in this photo), modified the hat, and made the crystals. While I generally prefer cosplays that require me to make all costume parts from scratch, I still quite like this one. It’s not every day that I get to wear a tie and a fedora hat!

The ‘90s alternative Lemming is my 15th Amiga related cosplay.

Many people have dressed up as Lemmings before, usually in groups, so I wanted to do something different with my costume. I combined elements from 3 alt styles that were around in the early 1990s: grunge, punk and goth. I also wanted to emphasise the solo aspect of this Lemming by carrying multiple props - you never know which one might be needed next!

My most anticipated event of the year, Amiga40, took place last week. I had the honour of being one of the guests there, much like I’d been at Amiga38 and Amiga37 before that.

So much happened that it’s hard to even know where to start. I met many old friends and acquaintances and made some new ones. I attended a concert by FastLoaders, one of my favourite bands. I debuted 3 new Amiga cosplays and got great feedback on all of them. Perhaps most importantly, I got to spend the weekend with people to whom I never had to explain “why Amiga?”, let alone “what Amiga?” - we might have different answers to the question “why”, but regardless of the specifics, we all get it.

To sum it up, I had a wonderful time at Amiga40. It’s safe to say that it was one of the absolute best events I’ve ever visited, Amiga-themed or otherwise. Coincidentally, this was the 40th convention I’ve attended since I started cosplaying in 2013.

I’m back from Amiga40. I’ll post about the event soon, but first I have a lot of photos to go through and thoughts to sort out. Spoiler: the event was fantastic!

In the meantime, here’s a great photo of The Machine, taken by Rudolf Stember. Seeing all the photos and hearing the overwhelmingly positive feedback has been really rewarding. This cosplay took me 980 hours to make, but it was worth it.
