My old apartment had an equally old #dishwasher. The dishwasher had a big lever that you had to swing to lock or unlock the door. The door had to be locked to run the dishwasher.

I chose to keep the lever in the locked position if and only if the dishes were clean. This made it difficult to forget or be confused as to the state of the dishes.

Modern dishwashers sadly don't have this feature…
