Roadside eating houses are common place on Koh Samui, throughout Thailand and across Asia serving one dish only in a small, fit-for-purpose, unpretentious, spotlessly clean shop, usually an extension to a house or business.

Note in this photo the legs of the cabinet at the back standing in Chinaware bowls which will have water in them to stop ants moving up into the cabinet.

Imported wines in Thailand are expensive.

This is because in Thailand imported wine is taxed as a luxury - presumably at the insistence of the fledgling Thai wine industry and big Thai liquor and brewing monopolies, regardless of free trade agreements like TRAFTA.

Bamboo plays a significant role in Thai cuisine, both in food preparation and as a cooking utensil. Bamboo shoots are a popular ingredient in dishes, especially in the North, while the bamboo itself is used to cook Khao Lam (sticky rice in bamboo).

Bananas originated in Southeast Asia.

There are 1,000 varieties of bananas globally, 20 - 50 native to Thailand.

Bananas were introduced to European and American markets in the late 18th early 19th centuries. Advancements in shipping and refrigeration technology in the 19th and 20th centuries made bananas universally known and popular.

Sticky rice is a glutinous type of rice extremely popular throughout Thailand.

"Sticky rice" in gay Asian American culture refers to the preference for dating or romantically pursuing other Asian men.

It's a term that, like "potato queen" or "rice queen," can be viewed as somewhat derogatory but also serves as a term of endearment or solidarity within the community.

Khao Lham is a tasty Thai dish that is a preparation of sticky rice, sugar, coconut milk and whatever small personal additional taste a maker will add in.

This mixture is filled into bamboo sticks, baked for many hours. To eat, split the bamboo open vertically. The white 'film' over the lower end of the opened rice is the delicate edible (optional) skin from inside the bamboo.
