Vagina MuseumIn many ways, the campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment was a product of its time. In 2012, social media was relatively free from suppressive algorithms. The hashtag #RepealThe8th was first used on Twitter by a now-private account on 25th November 2012. It swiftly went viral.
The hashtag remained in use to draw attention to the campaign and the impact of Irish abortion law throughout the campaign until the referendum in 2018. It made the topic visible around the world.
