The western U.S., particularly the Southwest, has experienced a notable increase in record-breaking high temperatures over recent decades, with recurring drought and heat waves. A research team led by Prof. Ye Hong from the School of Engineering Science at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has developed a radiative transfer model for plant leaves in the thermal infrared (TIR) spectrum, and unveiled the underlying mechanism governing the correlation between plant leaves' thermal infrared reflectance characteristics and their water content based on this model.
