#ReigningSound played live on my #WFMU radio program more than twenty years ago. It was their first visit to the station (they subsequently appeared at least twice more on other shows) and I was plenty nervous about meeting them. When they arrived, I was floored to discover they were completely enamored of the station and treated my invitation as both an honor and a sign of mutual respect. I was looking forward to a great session, but fate had more complex plans in store...

I quickly got the sense that bandleader Greg Cartwright was having an off night in that familiar and frustrating way that you can *always* tell when a revered musician wants to give it their all, but for whatever cosmic reason, things just... aren't... clicking.

In 2002, I was still relatively new to the mechanics of hosting live bands on my show, so I was just copying the format that my friend and colleague Stork (of WFMU's "The Stork Club") had staked his legacy on: After each song, open up the mic for brief applause from himself, the engineer, and the 3-5 people who might be hanging around in the production booth. That brief smattering of live applause gave a charming intimacy to Stork's sessions, but it also served as a subtle tool that reminded listeners they were hearing LIVE MUSIC ON THEIR RADIOS and not just a recording.

A few songs deep into Reigning Sound's set, something inspired me to take that practice one step further and I actually went on mic in the middle of their set and addressed the band, asking them to deliver a live station ID. ("You are listening to WFMU, 91.1 FM", etc.) Suddenly, as if every star in the universe had suddenly aligned, the band improvised an on-the-spot station ID set to music which magically transformed what had been a troubled set into an all-out rager.

To be clear, I take zero credit for this -- at best I was a mere witness to the sudden change in the mood, but I've always remembered it as a great moment and to this day, "You're So Strange" (the song they launched into after the ID) is one of my favorite Reigning Sound tunes.

I tell this story not to highlight a proud moment from my broadcasting past, but because just this past week, Reigning Sound member Alex Greene was a guest DJ on the @WFMUDrummerStream program "Music for a Free World", and he opened up the show with that exact recorded moment and went on to speak fondly of the entire session and visit to the station. It was great to hear his voice and music again after so many years, and it sent a major thrill up my leg to finally have an old suspicion unexpectedly validated. You can listen to the exact moment I describe (along with the rest of Alex's guest DJ spot) with this link. https://wfmu.org/archiveplayer/?show=124047&archive=230232
