In disorienting times, it's easy to dehumanize — subtly or overtly.

Rehumanizing ourselves is not sentimental work. It is disciplined work. It means maintaining contact with reality while refusing contempt as a strategy.

Clarity and dignity can coexist.

We all stand in need of so much mercy to keep out of hell, and mercy in our final moment. God may be sarcastic against such pleas when we offered no mercy to our neighbor.
