I love phalaropes! They are not common here, and I didn't even know they existed when I spotted this Red-necked Phalarope. I had spent the previous couple of hours taking pictures of ducks, So this small, delicate creature looked particularly elegant to me (even while chomping on bugs).

A few shots from yesterday's Jamaica Bay (NY) Shorebird Festival. The event featured a few birding walks, this one around the National Wildlife Refuge's marshy and extensive South Pond. Unfortunately, most photos were taken from rather far away. I'm including a fuzzy shot of a Red-necked Phalarope, which was over 300 yards away, because who knows when I'll see one again. Very cool birds - a pelagic shorebird. Also shown: a Blue-winged Teal couple, Pectoral Sandpiper, and Broad-winged Hawk.

My favorite birds are waders and one that I like a lot is the red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus). Compared to most other birds, their #genderroles are "switched"; when it comes to choosing mates, the more noticeable plumage, and the caring for eggs. The one on the image is a juvenile phalarope, I saw in summer '21 in Austria.

Red-Necked Phalarope less than ten foot away, one of the most confiding birds I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting! #nature #photography #naturephotography #bird #redneckedphalarope #wildlife @RSPBEngland @RSPB
