San Francisco teachers go on strike for first time in decades

Thousands of public schoolteachers in San Francisco have gone on strike for the first time in nearly 50 years. They are demanding higher wages, better health benefits and more resources for special needs students. The San Francisco Unified School District closed all 120 schools Monday and offered independent study to some of the district’s 50,000 students. The union is asking for a 9% raise over two years. The district is facing a $100 million deficit and countered with a 6% increase over three years. Negotiations have been ongoing for nearly a year without reaching a new contract.

SCOTUS Greenlights Dismantling of Education Department, “Unleashing Untold Harm”

The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Trump to dismantle the Education Department without congressional approval. The unsigned ruling paves the way for Trump to lay off 1,400 workers at the agency. The court’s three liberal judges dissented. Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the decision will “unleash untold harm, delaying or denying educational opportunities and leaving students to suffer from discrimination, sexual assault, and other civil rights violations without the federal resources Congress intended.” She went on to write, “The majority is either willfully blind to the implications of its ruling or naive, but either way the threat to our Constitution’s separation of powers is grave.”

"All across the country, teachers walked out – even in states where they were legally prohibited from doing so. These strikes were hugely successful, because communities across the nation rallied around their teachers, and the teachers returned the favor, making community justice part of their goals: #RedForEd rides again in LA (29 Mar 2025) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow https://pluralistic.net/2025/03/29/jane-mcalevey/#trump-is-a-scab
