As this article explains, we have passed a tipping point. In a good way!
You can see demand vs supply in real time by watching the wholesale price variations through the Amber app.
In my 3 years with Amber (I left recently bc I had an unfixed problem & there was zero customer service) I saw wholesale prices dropping steadily. The reason, I am guessing, is the continuing increase in domestic solar & battery systems.
Daytime power is dirt cheap & it’s not uncommon to see the price of importing from the grid become negative during the day (hence all those free daytime energy offers that are appearing). Peak evening prices have moderated also. In heatwave 3 years ago import prices went nuts & exporting from our small battery earned us $156 in 30 minutes. Recently on days well over 40’ Celsius the evening export price got to around $2 at its peak. (Tho I’m no longer a customer my account is still live on the app bc as I said, Amber has zero customer service). As more people have installed domestic batteries the price of import & export during evening peak has steadily fallen. Those battery rebates are good policy.
So yes, demand is increasing. Increasing export capacity from solar & battery systems is matching it. Yay this! 🎉
To watch this in real time check out Amber (if you can catch them).
