LauraOne of my favorite writers when I was growing up was Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I read pretty much anything of hers I could get my hands on, but a handful of titles got by me. I just finished reading Black and Blue Magic for the first time — out loud, to my kid. Definitely up there with the best of her work, and the kid gives it the thumbs up too. Such a cool thing to be able to share the experience!
Pulled out one of the kid’s favorite “baby books” last night — David Shannon’s No, David! (His Oh, David! is another favorite of ours.) The kid is endlessly entertained by the illustrations of David’s hijinks, and by hearing me channel the mother’s frustration/annoyance/panic/exhaustion. (It’s not hard!) I love the simple, straightforward depictions of a parent-child relationship that’s challenging but always ultimately full of love.
Last night at bedtime, I was reading Donna Jo Napoli’s Treasury of #NorseMythology to the kid, and I declared lights-out time just as we arrived at Ragnarok. He, however, was Not Having It — instead, he leaned over and started reading the next section out loud himself. I was so tickled/impressed that we ended staying up an extra half hour while he finished the book. I wonder whether this is the beginning of a permanent shift in how we do bedtime stories...
Yesterday Ben Franklin came up at the dinner table, so I broke out an old favorite as one of our bedtime books — Now & Ben, by Gene Barretta. Got a prompt “Oh yay, I LOVE this book!” when the kid saw it. Great collection of tidbits about history and science/tech — interesting to a 4yo, still inspiring deeper thought at 7. Absolutely adorable illustrations.
I need to pick up Barretta’s book about Leonardo da Vinci...
