@VE3NED, Did you see this? I'd love to chat on air sometime but I think my favorite rig; my #RD5R may have bitten the dust. The charger is plugged into the wall & the radio is in it but the bottom of the charger refuses to light up, as it's supposed to, to indicate that it's receiving power. Any advice on how to rectify that, if possible?

@dm3mat

Hooray that #qdmr is available via brew! That's progress.

I got a "segmentation fault" when I tried to use it on a radio that looks supported (OpenGD77 on RD-5R) but might not be. The writeup here

https://github.com/hmatuschek/qdmr/issues/297

should hopefully help in debugging, I am happy to experiment more or to RTFM if I missed something.

segmentation fault after reading code plug from OpenGD77 / RD-5R · Issue #297 · hmatuschek/qdmr

My rig is a Radioddity RD-5R, running OpenGD77. My qdmr is from Homebrew, Version 0.11.2 The cable I'm using is "USB programming cable for RD-5R RD-7R DM-1701" purchased from Radioddi...

Installed #OpenGD77 on my old #RD5R . No problems with the firmware installation, and at least some parts of my old code plug survived.

The documentation is pretty good all in all, but since I have an RD-5R and not a #GD77 all of the references to which key does what are wrong. (There is no green button, there are two orange buttons etc.) I'll be able to work through it once I get some more hands on time.

I'll figure out the analog side first.

Old radio, new firmware = new radio!

@w8emv I wasn’t aware that #OpenGD77 was available for the #RD5R. Thanks for the heads up.
Setting up my Radioddity #RD5R so that I can flash #OpenGD77 to it. Happily, the programming cable for it was easy to locate - let's hope the battery is still in OK shape after some time being discharged.

I currently own two of the early cheap DMR radios, the RD-5R (DMR software in a Baofeng form factor) and the GD-77 from Radioddity. Both are fine for talking to a local hot spot and I also use the GD-77 as a 2m/70cm FM analog HT.

The lowest cost DMR rig I have seen that's still in stock is the Baofeng DM-1701.

Are there any other low end DMR radios worth mentioning?

(Yes, I know better radios are generally worth it for lots of reasons.)
