Six NDH railcars were built for the Commonwealth Railways in 1954 by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company in the UK as subcontractors to Commonwealth Engineering. These railcars were powered by 6 cylinder Detroit series 71 diesel engines that delivered 105kW of power to a 1A-A1 wheel arrangement and, as delivered, ran on 1067mm narrow gauge
