While other wildflowers are fading with the coming of Autumn, the water ragwort (Senecio hydrophilus) is blooming brightly and keeping the bumble bees well-fed.

An invasive weed from Europe found in NZ is ragwort, it has bright yellow daisy like flowers and can grow up to 1.2 m tall. The plant spreads easily through the wind. It is avoided by cattle so overtakes pasture but sheep will eat it. Our orchard used to contain some, the Shropshires ate it. It can be toxic to cattle if in hay but luckily not sheep. www.teepeecider.co.nz #sheep #ragwort #orchard

Depending on the species male #bumblebees have specific height preferences at which they patrol spreading their queen attracting scent.
Some work their magic in the tree tops while others are more down to earth!
Despite mating being their raison d’être the sad fact is…

Golden Ragwort (Packera aurea). formerly in the Genus Senecio. Love these delicate looking but tough little blooms that can withstand wind and rain and keep blooming for a few weeks.

Bees and flies pollinate this species but the foliage is toxic to most browsers except for sheep.
