โœจ๐Ÿ”ญ If you're interested in learning more about #SpaceScience in the region, I have two older posts about a visit I made with my former institute to the #Effelsberg #RadioTelescope ( @MPIfR_Bonn) and the #Stockert radio telescope ( #Astropeiler).

Here's the link to the Effelsberg post:

This is one of the 28, 25-meter (diameter) radio telescopes that make up the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array ("VLA"), in the desert about 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico [USA]. Two people in the foreground give an idea of scale.

โœจ An engineering marvel from the 1970s! ๐Ÿš€
Construction began in 1967, with 40โ€“60 people working on the project for a total of 1,318 days. On an area of 154,000 mยฒ, the radio telescope with its 100 m diameter dish was built โ€“ including laboratory and office buildings as well as the control room. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿ”ง The ground had to support a load of 3,200 tons! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Milestones:
1966: Foundation of the institute
1967โ€“1971: Construction of the Effelsberg radio telescope
May 1971: Inauguration of the radio telescope ๐ŸŽ‰
August 1972: Start of scientific operations ๐Ÿ“ก

๐Ÿ”ญ Today, it is the second-largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world! ๐ŸŒ

#SquareKilometreArray #datacenter needs two #FaradayCages
SKA is an international project that is constructing 131,072 individual antennae with a combined area of around 1km2, making it comfortably the worldโ€™s biggest #radiotelescope and hopefully one that gives humanity a tool with which to gain new perspectives on our universe. Two Faraday cages ensure equipment inside the datacenter does not leak radio waves that could harm the operation of the giant radio #telescope.

Square Kilometre Array is so sensitive, its datacenter needs two Faraday cages to stop RF leaks

The Dish: Fact vs fiction

The Dish is an Aussie classic, set at Murriyang, a.k.a the Parkes radio telescope. Most of the film is based on fact, but what was added for the sake of a (rollicking) good yarn?
