TIL there was a proposal to genetically modify cats to glow in the presence of radiation:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_cat

The idea was to find ways to warn future people about buried radioactive waste. Nobody actually tried this, but knowing cats they'd end up figuring out how to glow at will to wake humans up and feed them or something.

Beginning on #ThisDayInHistory in 1951, ~6500 US troops were intentionally exposed to #radiation and psychological effects from #NuclearWeapons testing. Participation was mandatory, not by volunteering. The #BusterJangle tests were meant to see how troops would handle combat use.
Ah, yes, because nothing screams "hobby" like lugging around a 1.5 kg #radiation meter to sniff out pebbles with a side of #ionizing #radiation. โš›๏ธ๐Ÿ’ผ Who knew the secret to a fulfilling life was discovering just how irradiated your rock collection can get? ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿชจ

Safety4Sea: Container vessel carrying radioactive cargo stranded off Philippines

"...The case of the ship stuck off the Philippines carrying 23 containers of radioactive zinc dust mirrors the struggle faced by the MV Ruby in 2024, a Malteseโ€‘flagged bulk carrier loaded with 20,000โ€ฏtons of ammonium nitrate, which was similarly denied entry to multiple ports over safety and disposal concerns...."

LOL the UK tabloids finally got wind of the ship with radioactive containers. (serious situation, but it's not a floating Chernobyl)

San Francisco officials say they were kept in the dark for 11 months after the Navy detected plutonium at the Hunters Point Shipyard in 2024.

Mission Local

Today in Labor History, October 30, 1961: The Soviet Union detonated the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful explosive device ever detonated. Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov oversaw the development of Tsar Bomba, which Khrushchev initiated when the Soviet resumed nuclear testing after the Test Ban Moratorium. The bomb was dropped by parachute from an aircraft, and detonated at an altitude of 13,000 feet. In 1991, Soviet scientists revealed that the actual yield was 50 Mt (209 PJ).
