"島で観光などせず、再び飛行機に乗って帰っていく乗客は「マイル修行」に取り組んでいる人たちとみられるという。
「マイル修行」とは、航空会社が会員向けに設定しているステータス（会員グレード）を上げるため、搭乗回数や距離を稼ぐ行為とされる。
「マイル修行に加えて、さらに1月13日からJAL（RAC）のマイル2倍キャンペーンが始まったことで、島民が予約が難しく、島民が乗れない事態が生じています」（多良間村の職員）
役場の窓口には、宮古島にある病院の予約をキャンセルせざるをえなくなった住民も訪れているという。
多良間島の医療機関は、医師と看護師が1人ずつの診療所が1カ所あるだけで、宮古島の病院に通院する住民も少なくない。
