Three of my mini-PC power supplies have died over the last 2–3 months.
That’s half my #K8S cluster unavailable right now. 😓
All three nodes are old Optiplex 3010s, and their #QuickSync support isn’t great anyway. Right now #Plex / #Jellyfin is pinned to a single node with the “newest” CPU for transcoding.
Debating whether to replace the PSUs or just upgrade the dead nodes to newer mini-PCs.

Aha, so this is deliberate... Great. So the only officially supported Plex device that does work with HW transcoding is #BeeStationPlus.
Than I guess it was the right decision to look for another Plex compute server outside their portfolio.

Already 4 months since the #Synology 2025 models are out and #Plex hardware transcoding still doesn't work on the J4125 models (#DS425+ and #DS225+).
The 5.10 #linux kernel changes from Synology and the missing support to utilize the #QuickSync support are the main showstoppers.
Looking for a dedicated GPU for #transcoding purposes turned out to be the worst rabbit hole.🙈
So, I'm using a AMD Ryzen 4600G in my homelab featuring #ProxmoxVE. The hardware transcoding capabilities of AMD hardware is very much behind Nvidia and #Intel, even though it isn't half as bad as expected. Anyway, the best transcoding hardware (best quality at same size/profile) are Intel devices featuring #QuickSync. Setting up another dedicated transcoding device (featuing a low power Intel APU such as the #N100) device doesn't seem to make much sense for me. There are several Intel Arc GPUs on the market and they all have pretty much the same transcoding capabilities, so I'd like to get the Intel GPU featuring the lowest power draw, especially when idling. Imma have to re-compile #ffmpeg anyway, several times for several non-free libs (#QSV & #AMF) - this upgrade shouldn't cost more than 15 €uros (i can re-sell the surplus #SkyLake i5-6500T)
This should enable hevc_qsv using #QuickSync on the NAS.
Had issues with QuickSync in Jellyfin on my TrueNAS.
Managed to fix it by allocating 1 iGPU forcing the device id in TrueNAS, enabled GUC and some debugging of FFMPEG.

Holy cow. I've been mulling a new desktop PC build and was thinking about the new #Intel chips to get #QuickSync. But those power consumption numbers... yikes!
