The sweeping arch of the Victorian engine shed of Queen Street Station in Glasgow. Made of cast iron, it was designed by James Carswell and erected by P. and W. MacLennan in the 1870s. Queen Street Station was built by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, and opened in 1842 as a terminus for Scotland's first intercity rail service.

Because ScotRail, for reasons incomprehensible to me, changed the wait for my connection from a few minutes to nearly 25, it's quicker to travel into Glasgow (opposite direction to where I'm going!), change to the express, then back through the station I left from on the way to Edinburgh. Crazy.

This method of getting trains up the steep incline out of Queen Street Station continued until 1908 when cable-hauling was finally replaced by banking engines. The Avon Viaduct still forms part of the mainline route between Glasgow and Edinburgh to this day, more than 160 years after it was first built.
