Physicist Steve Hsu just posted a new arXiv paper showing how GPT‑5 can assist in physics research, from hypothesis generation to quantum‑foundations checks, while stressing human oversight. Could this be the next leap for large language models in science? Read the full analysis now. #GPT5 #SteveHsu #GenerativeAI #QuantumFoundations

It’s funny — Bell’s inequality didn’t break physics so much as it broke our confidence in knowing what physics is.
Maybe that’s the real frontier: realizing that certainty itself is the variable. ⚛️🧠💫✨

Clearing A Room with #QuantumFoundations Dept: It really is true -it doesn't matter what your chosen *effective theory* wrt basic #Quantum phenomenologies might be. The outcome in terms of calculations remains the same. For some this is a hugely satisfying feature. For very minority others (hello) itza blazing red flag that maths we are using are necessary but not sufficient to capture all the dynamics in play. QM is the most numerically accurate physical theory we have. Life's a beatch

This week was good for #QuantumFoundations in the Arxiv; this one is particularly interesting because the usage of operational theories is not only a foundations matter, but it is highly used in applications and proofs of quantum information advantage.

It is a constant aspect: quantum foundations keep proving itself interesting for the applied physicist. In defense of quantum foundations, here is an g(old) gem!

Why Physics Needs Quantum Foundations

We discuss the motivation for pursuing research on the foundations of quantum theory.

Just finished reading an interesting paper discussing non-linear dynamics.

The claim can be explained with the following task: Consider a researched in its laboratory (system S) and a physical system being tested (system A). Can the researched discriminate/learn if the total system SA is coherent, performing only local tests inside the laboratory?

The work shows that this is possible iff the theory allows for non-linear dynamics. (1/n)

Quantum dynamics is linear because quantum states are epistemic

According to quantum theory, a scientist in a sealed laboratory cannot tell whether they are inside a superposition or not. Consequently, so long as they remain isolated, they can assume without inconsistency that their measurements result in definite outcomes. We elevate this feature to a postulate, which we call Local Definiteness. If quantum states are ontic, this postulate must be derived by assuming the dynamical law is linear. On the other hand, if quantum states are epistemic then the postulate comes for free. We can then use it to prove that the dynamics must be linear. Therefore the simplest explanation for why experiments keep failing to find evidence of non-linear dynamics is that quantum states are epistemic.

Interesting unpacking from Hossenfelder on the issues she has with particle physics.

But I'm not sure she herself is immune from the motivational issues she cites. For example, are her reasons for preferring hidden variable theories in QM really any different from the ones she's criticizing here?

To be fair, I doubt anyone really avoids these issues. Testing matters! And which tests to fund seems inevitably a judgment call.

Q16 (part B): What is your reason for NOT favoring De Broglie - Bohm theory?

A: It is too complex compared to other interpretations - i.e. Ockham's razor

B: It has hidden variables, which makes the theory untenable according to Bells inequality

C: Nonlocality
