Used to be able to build a QRP transmitter using parts from your local Radio Shack store including the colour burst crystal. I gotta wonder how many colour TV sets would suddenly have funky colours due
to their next door ham radio op back in the day...

Set out this morning to test out #FT8 on my #truSDX using my little portable #20m loaded whip antenna. A local coffee shop has a nice patio, and really nice coffee: a great spot to operate #QRP from!

Sadly the USB cable I brought with me didn't work... but, the RBN did pick me up on CW using battery power and just over 3W!

I know about #POTA, #SOTA, #IOTA, #COTA, and even #WMPLOTA ... but what about starting Coffee Shops On The Air (#CSOTA)? Just a thought...

Also, my new radio transceiver from #QRP_Labs arrived! I ordered this back in the spring and--knowing that I still haven't assembled the QDX digital modes radio I bought back in 2021--checked the box to have it assembled and tested, so it took a little while. I haven't had an HF transceiver since I sold my Yaesu FT-817, so this is exciting to me.

This is the QMX+ 5-band #QRP radio. Comes with a nice calibration sheet showing the testing done.

Teide National Park (#POTA ES-2324, ES-0210, #WWFF EAFF-0075) poses some unusual challenges due to the volcanic ground and the lack of trees or man-made structures. You have to be prepared to put up the antenna all self-supporting. Conditions today were difficult with 15 QSOs in 44 minutes on #20m. #HamRadio #ParksOnTheAir #Amateurfunk #qrp #qcxmini #morsecode #hiking #mountains #tenerife #canarias #travel

I've been listening to #CW trying to recover my chops after years of inactivity. Listening to #POTA activations is helping. For whatever reason, I seem to have lost the ability to use paddles very well. It's probably the operator, but it may be the keyer. I still am fine with a straight key, enough that I think I am more aligned with #SKCC right now.
Hams, any thoughts? POTA will start for me next spring.

@alper Thanks, the dipole has come up a number of times. My concern for the dipole is how to hoist it up, either carry one/two telescopic fishing poles and/or find favourable trees.

The vertical has also come up, and I may try it with either different sets of coils for bands or a tapped coil!

Just too many homebrew projects piling up at this point!

@bmp I highly suggest a linked dipole as main and backup antenna. My #qrp kit have 2 default antennas and besides a random wire I trust a simple dipole to work efficient and without a fuss. If anything fails a dipole will work and with links you don't need a tuner at all.

Best of all with qrp is you can use thinnest wires and strings with it and having multiple antenna with suspension system is no issue. Get silicone insulated wire and braided dyneema cords both in 2mm.

Nice blog, inspired =)
