What I forgot to mention is I’m now 45. So I started that painting at least 24 years ago. And my path weaving in and out of various esoteric traditions and dipping into art has been meandering. It’s just how I seem to be. #adhd #qabalah
Anyway this Golden Dawn long predates the Greek fascist party and is utterly unrelated. People sometimes freak out at me when I say I was in the Golden Dawn. It also doesn’t help that the Victorian order used some symbols that have since become associated with fascism. #qabalah
Also, some terminology clarification, because it often comes up. The Golden Dawn was a Victorian-era esoteric order, kind of like the Freemasons or Oddfellows. It taught a syncretic mix of Western esoteric material like astrology, Christianized Qabalah (hence this spelling), adapted ancient Egyptian material, and probably some stuff influenced by theosophy. It was a real mix. Women and men were admitted from the start. They practiced formal rituals, fully scripted with many roles, costumes and props. You could only attend if you were a member but think of the fanciest church ritual you ever went to and you’ll get the idea. The original Golden Dawn didn’t last that long but it’s been revived many times all over the world, because they published all their rituals after they shut down. I was a member in one of those revived orders, which lasted from 2002 to 2019. (17 years, one year longer than the 16 years the original order lasted) #qabalah #adhd
The work of creation is never complete, and it’s up to us to keep going. That’s a tenet of Qabalah. But it’s also a bit of self-acceptance that what I create, even if it’s not perfect or complete is still worthwhile and good. #qabalah #adhd

When I was 20 or 21 I started painting the Qabbalistic tree of life on a poster sized piece of handmade paper. I didn’t understand the different color scales and mixed and matched the sephirot. I didn’t finish Malkuth because I think I didn’t have olive. I didn’t paint all the paths. I still liked it so framed it as I had it. I brought it with me when I moved to San Francisco at 22. I joined a Golden Dawn order at 25 and learned all the things I didn’t know when I started the painting. I progressed through the initiations up to the one equivalent to Tipareth. I did two stints as Hierus and one as Hierophant. Then I quit and took up weightlifting. Then I kind of came back and helped in the final years of the order to bring it to a close gracefully.

Today I finally hung that painting in the house I moved into 2 years ago. It’s still unfinished. Now, I think that’s how it should be.
