This was kind of my experience. But it was when BBS then web forums went to Six Degrees then Friendster. MySpace was mainly great for music discovery. Then Facebook walled garden destroyed it all.

Aggregation (accession? Not sure if there's difference of meaning.)
Curation.
Cataloging.
Discovery.
Weeding.

The World Wide web is *great* for aggregation. Sometimes for discovery (surfing), but really bad at the rest. Also used to be good for searching -- but not currently.

Even having lived through it, the Cory Doctorow @pluralistic book "Enshittification" is bringing to light a lot of details I didn't know at the time as I'm listening to it.

Flickr went to Yahoo (better now).

More about suppression than business:
LiveJournal went to a Russian company
Twitter destroyed by a fascist.

Facebook -- hate speech really took off off in 2009 when I left.

For anyone else who has a Samsung Android who has disabled Gemini and thought they disabled all the Google assistant features only to suddenly have the power button not work as a power button and brings up a "try saying" menu:
