Between Empires: the reissue

Ten years ago, almost to the day, I spent three weeks travelling in the USA, the UK and Germany. During that time I wrote a series of poems, entitled Between Empires. While many of these poems have been published individually, the collection itself has until now remained secret.

Happy Peter Pinguid Day!

"What happened on the night of the 9th March, 1864, a day now held sacred by all Peter Pinguid Society members, is not too clear.… Attack, retaliation, both projectiles deep-sixed forever and the Pacific rolls on."

In this episode, we're joined by David Cowart, author of Thomas Pynchon and the Dark Passages of History and Thomas Pynchon: The Art of Allusion, to talk about the history of the postmodern novel, and how Gravity's Rainbow defines the form. Other topics include: Chaucer, Joyce, Christmas Parties, if the British put a moratorium on German art during WWII, meta-narratives, Jerry Garcia, Weimar Germany, Marxists, the cult of the rocket, poster pasting, probability, the mechanical model of the human mind, Newtonian reality vs. Heisenbergian reality, entropy. "Pynchon’s clear doubts about whether America can overcome its attraction to fascism are bearing unwanted fruit in 2025. The doubts have been proven right. Pynchon’s view of the American right is plainly and perversely stated in Shadow Ticket when one character says to another, of youth described as “Hitlerboys” in a changing Hamburg, “I want to believe they’re only being obnoxious but I think it’s worse than that.” The response is curt: “It’s worse.”"

Thomas Pynchon Saw American Fascism Coming

The elusive author of paranoid, absurdist novels looks more and more prescient these days.

Rereading #Pynchon and Finn doesn’t seem to be a fan. Can’t win em all, I suppose. 🐈‍⬛📚

“a theremin of uneasiness, sliding around a narrow band of notes, in which it’s said you may come to hear repeated melodies, themes and variations, which is when you know you’re going bughouse, with only a very short period of grace to try and escape before it no longer matters." #pynchon https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/thomas-pynchon-saw-american-fascism-coming
