Prompted by a post from @bloor (https://bloor.tw/@bloor/116019862318950480), i think PFE (original lancs source) was one of those 'so this is what a good program is like' moments: do one job and do it well. Similar era shout out the developers (and yes it was likely single people) to #PuTTY, Pegasus mail, and VLC (i know the latter has grown somewhat, but at a time of supposedly needing 15 different video player apps, having one that 'Just Worked' regardless of codec was great).
