I had always used a broom and for banishing
and maybe a bundle of sage or other incense.
I seldom used a knife
and when I did, it was always directed outward.
sweep the floor
smudge the air
if need be, fling a dagger
crying out "APO PANTOS KAKODAIMONOS"
Today I cleared out a candle holder
for the first time, simply, cleanly, easily.
I held it to the flame, so the wax could begin to melt
just a little
just around the edges
just enough
I then struck into the wax with my knife
twisting it lightly
and out it came
without struggle
and without leaving anything behind
except a thin coat which protected the metal
and left everything brilliant.
I believe in parity between the physical and spiritual
I believe they mirror each other
and as this method is so effective in the physical
how much more-so in the world of the spirt?
I need to point my sword inside
I need to apply heat
not a burning heat, which dissolves everything
which burns and injures
just enough to bring things to a movable state
and with surgical precision
pluck the plank from my own eye
and see a better, more pure world.
To banish is to remove what should not be in a place
this works only so far as we do not care where things go
provided they leave
not in my circle
not in my back yard
To clean, to purify, is to put things in their proper place
to give them their proper name
to balance things as they should be.
I do not strive to remove all the wax from the holder
in fact to leave that thin coat makes everything better, smoother, cleaner
I do not strive to remove all stress and anxiety
but to give them their proper name and place
I can not fix the world
but I can improve myself
and in so doing, perhaps bring about a similar improvement
in the world around me.
