16-17 – Gyatso (1994, Switzerland)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 82 on The List, submitted by aloysius. This industrial punk jazz album from the trio that was Alex Buess (saxophones, bassclarinet, electronics), Knut Remond (drums, percussion), and Markus Kneubühler (guitar, synths) and produced by Kevin Martin aka The Bug might just pin you to the ceiling for an hour. You've been warned.

16-17 – Gyatso (1994, Switzerland)

Our next spotlight is on number 82 on The List, submitted by aloysius.

Three words: industrial punk jazz. If that piques your interest, this will most definitely float your boat, particularly if you just need a wall of noise to disappear into/pin you to the ceiling for an hour (apologies for the mixed metaphors, though it does seem appropriate in this, erhm, running-on-all-cylinders context). Documenting the trio that was Alex Buess (saxophones, bassclarinet, electronics), Knut Remond (drums, percussion), and Markus Kneubühler (guitar, synths) and produced by Kevin Martin aka The Bug (who we’ll meet again in a later spotlight), this album was hard to get a hold of until it was reissued in 2008 by French label Savageland Records, and then on vinyl for the first time in 2021 by German label Praxis (who we have to thank for the Bandcamp link). Now, can someone please scrape me off the ceiling, please and thank you?

The Vault by Maruja, self-released in 2024.

Every track we write is spawned from improvising together, a practice the 4 of us have obsessed over for the better part of a decade. Jamming is a place where we can completely let go and unleash our emotions sonically.

A phone in the middle of the rehearsal room records every jam we do and we have finally decided to release The Vault. It is a collection of 6 of our favourite jams we recorded between 2021-2023, it is Maruja in our purest form.

The Vault is now available to listen to for free on YouTube but if you are in a financial position to do so, please consider purchasing it on our Bandcamp. You can own it all for £8 or more if you’re feeling generous, the support helps us massively during this transition of making Maruja full time.

Love everyone, we hope you enjoy <3

New #review today: "#Spinifex is an #AvantJazz group based in Amsterdam, though its members come from various countries. Led by artistic director and chief composer #TobiasKlein on alto sax, the membership has changed somewhat over the years. Undrilling the Hole features seven energetic tracks of unpredictable music that ranges between tightly coordinated arrangements and free-blowing chaos." #ExposeOnline #FreeJazz #PunkJazz http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/spinifex-undrilling-the-hole-maxximus-2.html

Punk Jazz : John Zorn's Spy vs Spy at 35 : Aquarium Drunkard

Sometime in the mid-1980s, John Zorn was hanging out in New York City’s East Village when he made a career-altering choice: to take in a hardcore show at CBGBs. The experience profoundly shaped his next album, the ultra fast, ultra brief Spy vs Spy: The Music of Ornette Coleman.
