Lunch break in the Pulju Wilderness Area during my solo ski tour to this very remote part of Finland. For two weeks I did not see a single soul, which is quite rare even for Finnish wilderness areas in winter. Usually you at least run into reindeer herders. Other hikers are a rarer sight and it really depends on where you are.

Here is the interior of the Avisuorakammi, as requested by @meoralis . The stove was on the left, and firewood was stored in the right corner (just outside of the pic). You would sleep on the wooden sleeping platforms where my gear is “stored” 😅 Toilet is just a regular outhouse, which is of course cold in the winter and full of bugs in the summer.

The Avesuorri open wilderness hut, Avisuorakammi in Finnish, in the Pulju Wilderness Area, Finland. I visited this very cozy and small kammi while solo ski touring in the area in February 2024. A kammi is a traditional small hut built with a wooden frame and insulated with peat collected from a nearby bog. The peat acts as insulation on top of the structure. In the past, birch bark was used to separate the peat from the frame, but nowadays plastic is used instead.

October 2023 in the Pulju Wilderness Area, Finland. On the day of departure I was surprised by the first snow and had to haphazardly pack gear that would let me survive freezing temperatures. I did not bring skis, as I was unsure how much snow there would actually be. Needless to say, my rucksack weighed a ton on that trip. After injuring my knee in a slip and with the conditions turning bad, I had to cut my planned three week hike down to just one. Still, a nice hike 🤣

Open wilderness hut Korsatupa in the Pulju Wilderness Area, Finland—October 2023, during my two-week solo hike. This is one of the rare wilderness huts in Finland that has a sauna, which felt like pure luxury on a longer hike. It was especially welcome on this trip, as I got caught off guard by early snowfall and was basically hiking in summer gear—no snowshoes, skis, or proper winter equipment with me.

It always surprises me how much open water you can find, even in the middle of -30°C temperatures. Somehow, these small streams stay open for long periods, even in extreme cold. For us hikers, they always present a challenge, as crossing them over snow bridges or even ice is always an unknown danger.
