I figured, an endless runner game would work well as a metaphor for the modern academic publishing culture of #publishorperish: Collect pages and data for your papers while dodging paywalls, teaching, and APCs and try to get tenured.

If you agree that maybe this isn't how things should work, I can reassure you: Thousands of signatories of SFDORA.org and coara.eu are reforming the system. If you want a real-life community boost, check out

I had the chance to speak directly with the new President of the #Helmholtz Association yesterday, and, wow...

In essence, I asked the tired question about long-term employment prospects for PhDs and Postdocs.

The answer I got was (paraphrased) "Excellent scientists get excellent jobs, so if you strive to do excellent work you will get what you need"

No honest words about our murky system of promotion, the #WissZeitVG, a self-defeating publish-or-perish culture, etc etc.

This reflects either 1) a true belief that "the cream rises to the top", and promotion in science is merit-based, or 2) a blind spot to our structural and cultural problem(s). I don't know which is worse.

« Ceux qui se lamentent du retard de la recherche occidentale risquent de tomber dans le piège tendu par l’Etat-parti chinois »

Le régime de Xi Jinping, ayant droit de vie ou de mort sur la carrière académique, a fixé le nombre de publications comme critère primordial d’évaluation, analyse Isabelle Feng, vice-présidente du cercle de réflexion Asia Centre, dans une tribune au « Monde ». Elle rappelle la très faible liberté des chercheurs et l’importante corruption qui gangrène le pays.

"At its core the reproducibility crisis is a crisis of trust. The findings scientists publish and tout as facts, are often not replicable by others."

Nate Breznau argues that the reproducibility crisis is, at its core, a structural one - and that there is a solution: Diamond #OpenAccess weakens profit driven publishing, supports more ethical research, and improves the knowledge base of generative AI 👇

The path toward ethical science is paved with diamonds

I discuss why diamond open access is necessary to reduce perverse incentives in science, and to improve the outputs of Gen AI. Over the last two decades awareness of a Reproducibility Crisis penetrated all scientific disciplines. Studies recently showed that 90% in STEM and 95% in psychology were aware of this Crisis1,2. At its core … Continue reading The path toward ethical science is paved with diamonds

[older papers, but good guidance; we had all this in our university training, (hopefully) to good effect, but some reminders for us all, myself included!]
“Many young researchers find it extremely difficult to write scientific articles, and few receive specific training in the art of presenting their research work in written format. Yet, publication is often vital for career advancement, to obtain funding, to obtain academic qualifications, or for all these reasons. [They] describe here the basic steps to follow in writing a scientific article..."

You know, I thought it would be the clankers (LLMs, gAI) turning out more and more bogus information and ultimately eating their tails. But this article as about humans, under pressure to advance in hierarchical society, are turning out the slop that is clogging our knowledge bases using clankers as a tool.

We need to put a limit to this culture where the big AI conferences are growing to unsustainable limits. Last week I declined to participate as a reviewer for ECCV because they were expecting (unpaid) reviewers to review SIX PAPERS. Madness.
