‘I dream about toilets, I admit it’: the man on a mission to improve Britain’s loos

Poor accessibility, questionable hygiene, scattered needles and budget cuts … the UK is in the midst of a public toilet crisis. Thankfully, Raymond Martin is fighting back

So who needs *actual* public toilets?

Each study, no matter which city it was from, concluded that actual #PublicToilets are used overwhelmingly by:
- a #parent/ #caregiver with young #children (often using baby strollers)
- #elderly people
- #disabled people
- #unhoused people

… and since basically no one gives much of a rip about the last three on that list, ESPECIALLY unhoused people, there is little political will to ensure #accessible public #toilets are a priority.

A critical point made most clear by #Calgary's #yyc report (complete with maps and photos of site incidents!) is that #HumanWaste is a #biohazard #HazardousWaste, as human diseases can easily pass to others by #feces.

TL;DR: Alas, withholding development of #facilities and #services that would benefit all people in a community, including unhoused people, is a common policy program driven by political optics. And it stinks. 😡

I did a research paper some years' back wrt fearmongering by anti-#trans activists.

(At the time, much of that was coming out of the USA and being copied word-for-word by the same sort of activists in #Canada -- which was always surreal as not only was terminology NOT typical for Canadian usage, but the very laws themselves were absolutely NOT what were being claimed.)

In any case, I discovered through this that many Canadian cities had done #WashroomStudies wrt #PublicToilets.

They were a fascinating read: most folks think there are far more than in reality because the toilets they use when out and about are open to the public *in businesses*. Assuming they're not preventing unhoused people from access, they're still not avail 24/7.

Also: folks assume tourists need them, but generally tourists have the means to go to restaurants, etc and also use those toilets, plus they are housed at hotels, etc.

Public toilets with two single-occupant stalls. For some reason one was labelled women and the other men, and the women were queueing while the "men's" stall was free.

A mate spotted this on a day out at the seaside: a sign for a unisex toilet.

Brilliant!

About time someone considered the needs of merfolk.

Swansea schools set for £2.1m maintenance boost

The council’s cabinet has approved the major programme of works and it means around £2.1m is being directed to more than 17 schools for work to replace or repair roofs, electrical upgrades and other improvements.

Schools set to see improvements include Pontarddulais Comprehensive, Blaen-y-Maes Primary, Gors Primary, Waun Wen Primary, Cwmglas Primary and Grange Primary amongst others.

Another £40,000 has also been earmarked for the council’s toilet strategy on top of £50,000 last year to maintain and upgrade the council’s network of public toilets.

There is also money to maintain Swansea’s war memorials, which the council has pledged to maintain on behalf of veterans.

On top of the council’s commitment, more funding is due from the Welsh Government later in the year to help keep council schools and buildings in good shape.

Rob Stewart, Leader of the Council, said: “We are once again investing significant sums on essential maintenance improvements for our schools and public buildings.

“Our capital maintenance budget spending demonstrates how the council’s priorities match those of the people of Swansea and, at the same time, help make inroads into the backlog of maintenance improvements our schools and public buildings need.”

He added: “The programme takes into account the council’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and cutting energy costs.”

Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said: “As a council we recognise just how important education is not just to pupils, parents and staff but also to our city’s future economic well-being.

“The maintenance and repairs programme is in addition to the record £150m investment in new and improved school facilities in Swansea under the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.”
