A U.S. appeals court says Texas can require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms. The ruling Tuesday by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals was a victory for conservatives who have long sought to incorporate more religion into schools. The ruling sets up a potential clash at the U.S. Supreme Court over the issue in the future. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said in the decision that Texas’ law did not violate the First Amendment, which protects religious freedom and prevents the government from establishing a religion. Critics have said the law violates the separation of church and state.

While #Utah requires that #PublicSchool students have 2 doses of the measles, mumps & rubella #vaccine [#MMR], parents can opt out of those requirements for personal, religious or medical reasons. In the 2024-25 school year, about 11% of kindergartners had exemptions or were missing documentation to show they were vaccinated against #measles, up from about 7% before the Covid-19 pandemic. Vaccination rates need to be above about 95% to stem the spread of the #virus.

With the advent of neoliberalism in the 1980s, the mission of public education has become more about preparing for life in the workforce rather than preparing for life fulfilled by freedom and happiness. The state shapes working class consciousness rather than the other way around. It's time to change that.

We lost a great one today. 105th birthday was earlier this month.

#PublicSchool #teacher for decades. Artist. Learner of languages.

#GirlGeek before it was cool. Her first #tech was a Compaq luggable followed by an IBM PS/2. Was still active on her computer at 100 years old.

Mother. Grandmother. And 39 days ago, great grandmother.

Fitting for a lifelong #educator, her final act in #hospice was to help train a nurse on ultrasound-visualized IV placement.

We will miss you. Love always. #Peace
