I've always been interested in alternative protocols for consuming other people's content, I remember the days of posting from identi.ca and Diaspora. While these and their descendants (hello Mastodon) are very cool, I think they might play an important role in the future if the powerful decide to balkanize the internet further along the sames lines as China and Russia. If the US ever implemented this it would be such a huge blow to internet freedom, for everyone. I bumped across a project called Freenet which looks incredibly promising in case that day ever arose. It has really sparked the interest of my inner tech nerd.
